Professional Copywriter Wellwrittenwords!

SEO Guide

This essential guide to White Hat SEO practices.

will help you to get on the fast track to a solid and reliable organic ranking with the search engines. It is designed to help potential clients see where they are in the search engine optimization game. Are you making common mistakes that will destroy your ranking, no matter how great the SEO content? Before I begin work on a new site I always check out websites for the issues that I've listed below to ensure they won't be harming your Google pagerank, and my reputation as a SEO consultant of course!

Concrete SEO Strategies

Hiring a SEO consultant who uses ethical SEO strategies can go a long way towards building your presence on the Web. There's no doubt that quality web content is essential if you're to be competitive. This means achieving a Google pagerank that will include you on the first page of a search.

A good SEO copywriter will almost certainly be an essential part of your plan, unless you aim to do the writing yourself. It is possible, but it will likely take you several months of research until you get to know more-or-less what you're doing. Also, it's difficult for anyone to match the skills of a professional SEO copywriter. If your competitors have hired the best copywriter they can find, you won't stand a chance! It could be that your time is more profitably spent doing whatever it is you do.

The most important thing you can do to make sure you get noticed favorably by Google and Yahoo is make sure you have unique title tags on each page, and that they contain a keyword that's relevant to that page. Of course there's a lot more to code optimization than that, but it's good to start here.

Black Hat Strategies

If you're toying with the idea of hiring content from a content providing company, or (heaven forbid) planning to "lift" some off an existing website, my sincere advice to you is don't! Why? Simply because both these options will harm your Google pagerank, and could very well get you banned from several search engines. In addition, if a site owner who has spent months and a lot of money creating a top-ranking website suddenly finds that his or her Google pagerank is slipping, or even that they've been banned due to your action, you may even find yourself the subject of litigation. A lot of online businesses, rightly, take plagiarism very seriously indeed.

While good SEO consultants don't come cheap, the results can be astounding. I have had clients who are reluctant to commit to the full expense of providing content for their site. Until they see their page at the top of a search. Then, they tend not to talk about how much it's costing them anymore! It's not unusual for orders to start rolling in before we even finish putting up the pages. SEO consulting and copywriting is a sound investment for your online business, and is still one of the cheapest things you can do to boost your online presence.

However, there's only so much even the best SEO copywriter can do. You also need to make sure that other critical issues are taken care of to achieve maximum search engine optimization. To build a credible website that will do justice to your business it must create a professional impact in every way. This includes appearance, content and navigation. Increasingly, the search engines are using algorithms that take everything into account and we need to be vigilant. Below is an SEO checklist of issues that can make or break your Google pagerank. If you take the trouble to fully optimize your website, it will only be a matter of time before you achieve the ranklng you need for success on the Web. You may never even need to hire an SEO consultant that could cost you thousands.

Remember that web page optimization is an ongoing process. You must pay attention to your optimization on an ongoing basis if you are to achieve, and keep, your coveted Google pagerank.

# Does your site feature adult content? If it does, I won't work with you, and neither will the search engines. Period.

# Is your site navigation JavaScript or (worse) Flash based? If so you need to get it changed as quickly as you can. Contact me for details.

# Do you use iframes and abundant JavaScript applications? Flash movies? If so you are shooting yourself in the foot. If your site is in iframes, the search engines can't read it. All they'll see is a blank page. Don't believe me? Install the Google toolbar onto your browser and click on the blue circle next to the "Page Rank" tab. Select "Cached Snapshot" of your page. See what I mean? Same applies to JavaScript and Flash movies. It all may look wonderful on the page, but what's the point if the search engines can't see it?

How fast does your page load? Got to Submit Express and load your URL where it tells you to check your META tags. Don't enter your URL where it says submit: You will need to click through on the "Meta Tags Analyzer" link. On the results page you can see how many seconds it took for your page to load. The faster this is, the less likely visitors are to simply click away because they ran out of patience.

How much content do you have? Less than 250 - 300 words is not enough. Make sure you're doing your subject justice with some well-thought-out information.

Have you divided your website up into a page for every different subject? Don't try to skimp here. The more pages you have the better. Optimize for a few closely related keywords at a time. This will get you a better ranking. If you try to cram all your keywords onto one page the search engines will hate it and you'll be diluting your results.

Is your site navigation well thought out, easy to understand and negotiate for visitors? Have you taken care of tag optimization?

Are all your links working? You can be penalized for broken links. Check your site regularly because pages change. Links to pages on another site may be removed. Using keywords in your links is another good way of improving search engine optimization.

Have you arranged for a few links from solid, reliable web sites with complimentary content? Especially as far as Google is concerned, this is essential.

I left this one till last, but perhaps it should have come first. Have you employed any underhanded, or known unethical SEO tactics to get traffic? Ghost text? Cloaking? Word stuffing? Worse? If you have, you need to reconsider your position carefully. These tactics can get you banned. Simply. If you've already been banned by Google, the best thing to do is buy a new domain name and start again. It's that serious. It'll be cheaper and faster than trying to undo all the damage. Put it down to experience and consider it a lesson well learned.
