Building Brand Awareness

Building brand awareness is not an easy task. It’s especially difficult to make sure that you’re targeting the right audience. The elements of branding are easy to identify though….To begin with, what is the customer perception of your brand right now?

  • What are the expectations of buyers or consumers?
  • How does your product rank when compared to others in the same category?
  • Are there any negative associations that you need to overcome?

If you look at the track record of other successful brands, you’ll have to agree that the main element of successful branding is service. Over deliver and underpromise. Acquiring positive attributes, whatever they are, will always contribute to your overall branding strategy.

To develop your branding strategy, you need to first take a step back and consider what your ultimate objective is. Do you want to sell lots of cheap widgets? Or are you going for the luxury market? You will have to know at the beginning because campaigns for these different categories of products will be very different. Consider the constrast in image between, say, Walmart clothing and Ralph Lauren designer ranges. Consider the difference in the way the repective companies approach their brand. In truth, most companies lie somewhere between the two in their branding objectives.

So where do you need to be seen? Develop a persona (imaginary customer, representative of your audience), and imagine where and when you would have an opportunity to speak to him or her. The develop a marketing strategy that will get you out there as often as possible. Design your marketing message to be specifically meaninful for your persona. Talk in his or her language, and address concerns that he or she may have.

Most importantly, be distinctive, be creative, be better than everyone else.

Study your competitors carefully. This is the key to standing out from the crowd. Know what each is doing and do it better.

Always have some way to test responses to your branding-marketing campaign. Whenever possible, test two versions of everything and go with the one that gets a better response.
