Bot Nets–Do We Need to Worry?
You may or may not have heard of Bot Nets. If you haven’t heard of them, you’ve almost certainly experienced spam from them. Over the past couple of months, Slash Dot reckons we’ve had around a 30 percent increase in spam as a result of Bot Net activity.
So first of all, what is a Bot Net?

Basically, it’s a collection of software robots. While they run automatically, they can be controlled automatically. Sounds scary doesn’t it? Actually, although we’re only just starting to hear about them, Bot Nets are not new, as you can see from this detailed description. For a couple of years, the threat has been steadily building.
Needless to say, unscrupulous people are making lots of money from scams that revolve around the use of Bot Nets. Otherwise they wouldn’t be a threat, would they? Since that article was written (link above), some of the ways that Bot Nets are used have been closed down. But cyber criminals have opened up new, and more sophisticated routes to exploit their tools, and us.
